Technology Outsourcing - a way of cutting cost

Technology outsourcing is just one of the many types of outsourcing that companies do to cut costs without compromising the quality of their products or service, or in other cases a means of gaining access into specialized technical skills that would otherwise take much time to develop in-house. These two concepts are the foundational logic behind the spread of technology outsourcing as a viable business model for many companies.

But first, let’s take a look at the global business environment that drives or justifies technology outsourcing. Given the modernity by which all businesses are transacted, there are a few requisite steps for one to succeed in business. The most obvious is lowering costs and maximizing profits, another is efficiency and reliability, and still a third is marketing and media relations. These three factors, in combination is lending credence to the practice of technology outsourcing to drive a business forward.

The business environment demands that technology should be a vital part of everyone that conducts business in a globalized world. Almost every transaction is accomplished via an online system ushering the era of “paperless transactions.” Most forms of communication are done through email. As a business grows, the data generated by that business – exact details for all material purchases, contracts executed for various clients, permits and licensing regulations, bookkeeping and accounting needs, payroll management, capital expenditure tracking, even safekeeping private employee information – will need to be housed in a database that will allow easy retrieval of information whenever needed. All these requirements mean that any company will have to maintain a sound IT infrastructure in order to conduct sits business efficiently and effectively.

It is for cases like these that technology outsourcing finds the utmost value. On cost considerations alone, a company would need to procure IT systems, data servers, terminal computers and many other electronic devices to wire every facet of the business. This requires significant capital expenditure on the part of the company. On top of the initial investment, other cost considerations include operations costs – electrical bill for system operation as well as system cooling, maintenance costs when parts need to be replaced, and manpower costs – the total cost you need to build a team of competent and qualified IT professionals to run, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade your team as needed.

A second consideration is the time required to develop a stable technical skills base without having to pirate experienced professionals from other organizations paying them with huge sums to jump ship. The common employees companies hire are fresh graduates with little or no experience in the corporate environment and needing hours and exposure to learn the required technical competency.

All these considerations make technology outsourcing a more palatable option for most companies. One can easily enter into contract with an established IT company complete with the required IT infrastructure, skilled personnel, competent programmers and software engineers and well-versed in the different tricks that will maximize equipment performance at minimal cost. Also, because of an existing Service Level Agreement that defines the expected services to be delivered, the quality of service is always kept in check so the provider continues to work hard to deliver the service.

These motivations and model for technology outsourcing also find applications beyond the IT industry such as telecommunications, website development, even design consulting for various other project types. The convenience of having to pay for only the services you get without expending money for capital investment is a highly attractive proposition for companies looking to cut costs.

It is expected that technology outsourcing will continue as a business trend as more and more companies seek to focus on their core businesses and limit unnecessary spending. For this reason, the world of technology outsourcing is bright and beautiful.
